Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford Motor recently announced a global recall of 317,000 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs, involving models from 2021 to 2025. The main reason for this recall is that when the vehicle's 12-volt battery is abnormally discharged, the front door electronic lock may fail, resulting in the user being unable to open the door from outside the vehicle, and in extreme cases, there is even a risk of occupants being trapped. Ford has not received any relevant accident reports so far, but has asked dealers to suspend sales of affected models.

Technical details

The fault is caused by a software logic defect in the electronic door lock system. When the 12-volt battery suddenly enters a low-voltage state, the system fails to maintain the door emergency unlocking function. Unlike conventional OTA upgrades, this repair requires the owner to go to the dealer in person to complete the software flashing. Ford engineers are developing a new version of the control program, which is expected to be pushed in the third quarter of 2025.

Market impact

The scale of this recall accounts for 17% of the historical sales of this model (calculated based on 2022 data);

The US market still achieved sales of 4,724 vehicles in May, an increase of 11% year-on-year;

This is Ford's sixth large-scale recall this year, and the proportion of electrified models involved has increased significantly;

A review of Ford's recall history

In 2023, this model recalled 35,000 vehicles due to overheating of the high-voltage contactor;

In 2022, the domestic batch recalled 775 vehicles due to defects in the power battery relay;

At the same time, brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen also issued multiple electric vehicle recalls;

Ford's related recall guidelines

Some Ford car owners are expected to receive official email notifications from July, and they need to complete a 30-minute software upgrade through the dealer's special equipment. During the process, the driver's side door can be opened with a mechanical key in an emergency.
