The official website of the State Administration for Market Regulation of China announced on May 30 that Spotlight Automotive Ltd (a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall Motors) has launched a new round of active recalls, involving 55 domestically produced MINI COOPERs and 15 domestically produced MINI ACEMAN pure electric models. This is the second special treatment of power battery problems after the recall of 177 models of the same brand in February this year.
MINI COOPER produced from June 1 to August 17, 2024, equipped with 54.2kWh ternary lithium battery, with a range of 402 kilometers
MINI ACEMAN produced from January 10 to September 18, 2024, using the same battery technology
The positive and negative electrodes of the battery cells are offset during the battery production process, which may cause excessive self-discharge and overheating risks in extreme cases. The fault is manifested by the lighting of the dashboard warning light and the limited charging function.
Spotlight Automotive will replace the problematic battery module for free. Car owners can check the specific process through the 400-800-6699 hotline or the website of the Recall Center of the State Administration for Market Regulation (www.recall.org.cn). It is worth noting that the recalled vehicles and the 177 vehicles recalled in February are from the same batch of process problems, but the fault manifestations are different.
As BMW's first global pure electric joint venture project, the China-made MINI COOPER is priced at RMB 189,800-266,800, and its main feature is "kart control feeling". Its 1.6-ton vehicle weight is 300 kilograms lighter than the same-level electric vehicles. However, the 402-kilometer range is less competitive in the 200,000-level market.
